Overlapp'ing' Interests to Explore Social Synergies
Delving into a startup that focuses on uniting people, places, and passions in a world of shared discovery
👋 Welcome back! Hope the weekend was great!
From my desk: It’s getting chilly out and I am due for a new jacket, if you have any recommendations for a solid jacket or coat in between a sweatshirt and a full winter jacket, hit me up!
Anyway, enough nonsense, let’s get into this week’s feature…
This week's startup, attempting to stay warm out here in NYC, is reshaping how we uncover shared interests and organize our evenings out. I introduce to you...
“Say goodbye to scattered notes and lost bookmarks. Plan your fun and find the perfect people to vibe with.” – Overlapp
🎬 Behind the scenes
Co-founded by John Finley, Caroline Risman, and Shrihari Prabhakar
Established in 2021 and actively seeking funding
Currently in a rebranding process: website and app visuals are subject to change
Crafting an innovative platform for social networking and wishlist curation
Officially known as Overlapp Inc. and also recognized as Overlapp.ai
Core mission centers around authentic connections through shared interests, likes, and dislikes
🎤 Intro
Remember the last time you were eager to play basketball or go to a concert but couldn’t find anyone to join you? It’s a letdown, isn’t it? Well, that’s exactly the situation Overlapp aims to remedy.
Overlapp offers a platform where you can effortlessly organize and share your experiences and opinions about favorite dining spots, movies, concerts, and more.
If it's on your event wishlist, chances are it's on others’ as well.
It's all about connecting socially over mutual likes and desires, setting the stage for new friendships and shared adventures.
📦 Product
A prototype is currently available on all mobile devices, with a completely rebranded and updated version, incorporating user feedback, and is slated to launch in the coming months.
Making Money
With most social media platforms the go-to revenue stream is advertisements; Overlapp sets itself apart by focusing on personalized advertising based on user-generated opinions and reviews, rather than eavesdropping on daily conversations — ahem, elbow nudge, Google.
Another route that is along the horizon for monetization is possible partnerships with ticket bookers or travel agencies. This would allow users to purchase tickets directly through the app saving time and energy. But that’s a longer-term vision.
🚀 Key Drivers for Overlapp
Let’s take a look at some key attributes of this platform…
Proprietary Concept
Overlapp's unique selling point lies in its innovative approach to social networking which focuses on individual user experiences to create something exceptionally useful. Emphasizing shared experiences provides a refreshing alternative to traditional social media models. This 'inside-out' approach to networking enhances user engagement and creates avenues for meaningful, user-centered connections.
Data-Driven Personalization
By leveraging data analytics, Overlapp personalizes each member's experience, offering customized recommendations that encourage exploring new city attractions and mingling with different social circles.
This customization makes each user's journey unique and engaging.
These drivers are crucial in propelling Overlapp forward in the competitive world of social media, ensuring it not only captures but also retains a significant share of the market.
🪨 Speed-bumps on the road to success
As I’ve said before, a crucial aspect of evaluating a start-up is identifying all the potential roadblocks on its path to success. Let’s get into them…
Traction & Funding
Securing both, user traction and fundraising creates a bit of a chicken-and-egg dilemma for most social media companies & platforms.
Gaining user traction is necessary to demonstrate viability and attract investors, but securing funding is usually crucial for enhancing the app in a timely fashion, which is necessary to boost user traction.
Competitors
Competition is inevitable for any company, especially when a certain idea is compelling. After all, a good concept naturally attracts people wanting a share of the success. So making sure this company can grab a hold of some market share is going to be key for success.
Some of Overlapp’s competitors include…
Saturday - Socialize and Network Application
Meetup - Community-Based Event Networking
Nextdoor - Neighborhood Social Interaction
🔮 Crystal Ball Conjectures
Prepare to stretch your imagination's wings. We are about to take off on an exploratory flight through the potential highs and lows that could await this company on its way to the big leagues.
⛈️ A shadowed outlook
The worst-case scenario for all companies, whether it’s a social media platform or a mattress store is an absolute flop, no traction or revenue, and an abrupt end to this conversation.
🌄 The hopeful horizon
However, on the brighter side, our best-case scenario can differ pretty significantly for each business. A mattress store may be happy with just its healthy profit margins and call it a day.
But here at the Weekly Scramble, we like to dream big.
Ideally, Overlapp would rapidly gain popularity along the East Coast, becoming so mainstream that it becomes rare to NOT see someone using this app for their reviews and future events on a night out.
Soon after, this trend would repeat on the West Coast, down South, and nationwide. The app's widespread acceptance could become so impactful that even huge players in the industry like Meta may start getting nervous.
